Tranquil Turkey
So
much has changed in Turkey in the past decade–westernised ‘progress’ is
truly a two-edged sword. Whilst it has brought many benefits for locals
and visitors alike, it is becoming harder for those of us who prefer to
escape the package tour crowds, to find the little pockets of ‘real
Turkey’. Villages with all their traditional warmth and friendliness;
not the inevitable bazaar call of “Where are you from?” “Special price,
for YOU!”
Aphrodite Hotel is one of these little hidden gems, tucked away in the
picturesque little fishing village of Bozburun. Built by Ramazan Olgun
and his family in 1991. This place has a million dollar location; with
it’s position immediately on the waterfront, surrounded by the pine
mountains, yet it still remains quiet and tranquil. And most of all,
with a family ambiance that makes you feel instantly at home.

You
can chill out on a hammock enduring the beautiful smell of the fig trees
or soak up the sun on their beach patio. Sip on a beer or raki and
admire the magnificent sunset. There are kayak facilities to explore the
extensive, sheltered bay, and breath-taking views from hikes along the
hillsides.

The
hotel has recently been redecorated; with it’s white washed walls, it’s
Mediterranean blue arched windows and it has a tropical garden with palm
trees, cactuses and tropical flowers. It is surrounded by green islands
and shimmering sea.
Dinner is served on the sea platform giving you the view of the falling
sun. For a starter you can choose between Mediterranean dishes. And fish
is freshly caught for you.

The
little village of Bozburun is just 15mins walk away, or a few minute
ride in their little transfer boat. This is one of the last villages to
still have a thriving traditional wooden boat building community. It’s
fascinating to watch the local craftsmen still at work.
For a taste of modern day the city of Marmaris you can
take a boat for an hour’s ride. There’s nothing like coming home to
total tranquillity after a frenetic day’s fun around the bazaars!

All
relaxed and looking for a little more activity after a while? Ramazan
can organise all sorts of other local adventures, such as a fishing
expedition with the locals perhaps – sailing, horse-riding, hiking to a
local waterfall and there are also other historic areas nearby.
